I'd agree with most of the previous posts. Inexperienced paddlers in the bow, getting off the main routes, using a good outfitter, etc. However, ten days might be too long for young teens. Have they wilderness camped over a week before? The BWCAW is very special -- I figure it is worth presenting the best first impression possible (regarding fishing, bugs, comforts, duration, weather, etc.). Many first-timers never come back! Am I off the mark? I'd agree with you about the big-water problem with kids. For example, it's frustrating to get pinned down by medium winds at the landing (or end of the first portage) by moderate winds, with your inexperienced teenager begging you "not to worry about the whitecaps". Rent stable canoes (of course). An out-of-the-way entry point on a smaller lake might fit your requirements well. What time-of-year are you planning? Late-August might be a good time -- if you can wait that long! Good luck. I hope you get to enjoy a great trip.
