Don't lose track of the fact that if you go, you go to have fun, not set any distance records. If you're confident that the kids will enjoy and are ready for the "wilderness" experience, you can always adjust your pace and itinerary to fit their physical limitations. Nothing says you have to travel every day.

As I get older, I find that great rewards can still be had even though my legs and lungs aren't up to what they once were. My wife and I move at what many might consider a snail's pace, but thoroughly enjoy ourselves. That always should be the primary objective!
