I didn't think Blueberry Island (on Sturgeon?) was large enough for any type of conscientious sanitation anyway so it really seems a double shame. Obvious sites always get the most abuse even when they aren't good campsites to begin with. I'm trying to determine which flies you're talking about. Blackflies (they go mostly for neck and forehead) or flies that are black and bite mostly ankles. Friendly flies don't bite, they are just annoyingly friendly. They should be just about gone since the pillers are gone for the year. (Right???) Deer flies are the ones that do the ever decreasing circles around your head. They are few and far between but definitely maddening. Blackflies are tiny springtime buggers that wouldn't bother you in an enclosed space like a tent. They'd be to busy trying to get out. (They should be gone by now too.) About the size of small house flies, Stable flies (I think these could be it... are cowardly ankle biters) are normally associated with dung. (Hence the name.) They really aren't effectively discouraged by repellents or socks. They are cautious, quick and therefore tough to swat. If they were the ones you were lucky to get at least that satisfaction. Too bad you couldn't swat the people who left the mess. I always wonder about that. I've seen it too many times. At best, I guess some people think it goes away with the next rain. I can assure everyone it does NOT. Hard to believe that at least one person in a group doesn't know any better. I've probably paddled with 50 different people. (40 of those total newbies.) I can only remember one problem on one trip with a cigarette butt found at a portage. I was amazed at the group's total outrage. (And damn glad it wasn't my brand!) It turned out to be unintentional if it was even dropped by any member of our huge group. If QuietJourney ever does any good for anyone or anything I hope the end of ignorant crappers would top the list. It's gotta be intentional. Who is really that lazy or stupid? On a lighter note - how's the water level in the Deux these days? Posted by db on August 08, 2002 at 14:10 |
