Portage Description:
A fairly long portage that climbs straight up in the beginning and goes straight down at the end. At the beginning of this portage several ankle deep muddles must be negotiated before the fist steep ascent of 100 feet begins. Many people have thrown logs and branches in these muddles in an attempt to fill them so caution must be used when walking through them. After the steep beginning is over the trail continues to ascend at a gradual rate before leveling out. In the summer of 99 there were several trees across the trail which must be maneuvered around. In the last 10 rods the trail loses 50+ feet of elevation in one large hill. This last descent is covered with large rocks which become very slick during wet weather. In dry years a small bog-like shoreline must be negotiated before reaching deep enough water to float a canoe; don't be surprised to sink waist high in mud when trying to load your canoe in dry years.
