The
Boundary Waters Canoe Area:
At over a million acres in size, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
contains 1200 miles of canoe routes, 15 hiking trails and approximately
2000 designated campsites. Its 150 miles of wilderness (running adjacent
to the international boundary with Canada) endears itself to nearly
250,000 visitors annually making the Boundary
Waters the most popular wilderness area in the US and the best part
is, it's a canoe camper's paradise.
The cost of a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness trip, beyond outfitting
if you need it, is minimal. That may be one reason the Boundary Waters
is so popular with families and group canoeists. Another reason may
be the large number of entry points.
Quetico Provincial Park:
Covering over 4750 square kilometers and having only 2,200 backcountry
(interior) campsites scattered on over 600 lakes, it's no wonder Quetico Provincial Park
is considered a world class wilderness canoe camping destination and
that doesn't come cheap. Expect the cost of a Quetico canoe trip to
be far more then the neighboring wilderness areas. Canoeists can only
enter Quetico Provincial Park via six ranger stations, of which, only
two or three are accessible by road. Most are canoe, fly or tow in only.
Together, Quetico Provincial Park and the Boundary Waters
Canoe Area comprise over two million acres of the world's best flatwater
canoeing. The Boundary Waters,
AKA the BWCA, is located in the
Superior National Forest of northern Minnesota. Quetico lies just across
the border with Canada in northwestern Ontario. While each offers a
unique canoe camping / tripping experience, the character of the wilderness
is basically the same. Quetico-Superior full of loons,
eagles, moose, beaver, otters, timber wolves, black bear and lots of
really, really stupid fish.
