Portage Description:
This portage is at the far west end of the west section of Burntside. It started as a creek that got shallower and shallower until impassable. The trail emerged out of the lake grass and continued for 50 rods of mixed roots and crotch deep mud. The trail then mounted a low rock ridge and proceeded up and down similar ridges for 150 rods. Downs and ups frequent, rocky, mossy, and slippery (as it was raining). We met some rangers with chain saws doing trail work. It was really weird hearing a chain saw in Quetico on a little used portage. There may have been another trail but I saw no sign of a branch so this is likely the path. Never again.
Lake after portage: Bentpine
Known campsites: 2
Lake Description:
The lake is stained and is a good walleye lake. The nice campsite is on an island in the SW part of the lake. It has an old anchor chain and a big blueberry patch. Plenty of Bear sign at this site but I have never seen one there in person (bear-son). The other site has no good landing.
