Portage Description:
I'd rate this a "never again", but since I've done it twice, '04 & '05, it's not. It doesn't seem as bad the 2nd time. I guess I knew what to expect. The Cache River is really about 1/3 of the way. It looks like half way on the maps though. I was at the Cache River in 1 1/2 hrs. and took 5 hrs. to complete the whole portage. I was staging 2 carries, leapfrogging past each drop for 5 min. and returning for another 10 min. carry. That works good for me. I'm never separated from gear and the short recovers work to keep a steady pace. The portage isn't hard to follow, but it is wet in places. Sometimes more than knee high rubber boots can handle. The softest place is about 10 mins. before you reach the Cache River and you'll need to use you boat to do the short but deep river crossing.

Lake after portage: Cache
Known campsites: 4
Lake Description:

Nice Lake Trout fishing in the spring. When I was there in '04 I had the lake to myself for 2 days. But in '05 I shared it with 4 different groups. I guess we were all thinking the same thing.
