Todays POD is one of the clearest Picto's I've ever seen.
Where is it at?
I'm wondering "if" the Native person(s) who painted this and many others, wasn't under the influence of some Magic Mushrooms
The Moose(?) seems obvious, but is that a Wolf/ Native Peoples dog, chasing it?
AND that guy after them both looks like Sasquatch, or maybe PJ after a couple double fingers from the Jug  

If there ever were picto's that were convincing for "forgery"...those might be it

I took a nearly identical pic this year (not as well photographed, of course!) but I never made it to Quetico.  There is a spot on the NE corner of Aegean Lake that looks suspiciously similar to the spot in your pic....

Wherever the heck it is, I'm just like old MK631... wishing I was there!

And, mentally, I am.  I thank you & all POD providers for fueling my escapist moments.  Keep those pics rolling in to db, folks; I believe his tank is still close to empty... and we have LOTS of daydreaming miles to go!

Knowing it's September and not some hot July day ... Ahhhhh!

Ahhhh! is right. No bugs, not much wind, no rain, high temps in the low 70's, quiet and solitude....just about as close to heaven as I'll ever get.

Nice shots today and yesterday looking down the lake.    Yesterday's looked like the canoe on the horizon was floating suspended in mid-air.

Truth be told, db, I was too engrossed trying to figure out what the heck the green and orange stuff was on those plates.

I should have recognized it as salad (it seems so obvious now) but in the context of a canoe, I was confused.

I mean, I would assume that picture wasn't taken in somebody's backyard but in the north country, thus shouldn't that be hardtack and bannock and maybe fish leavings?

If I pulled a head of lettuce, some carrots and a cucumber out of my Duluth pack, I'd be roundly mocked.

I looked at it as I processed it for the POD and looked at it again when I set the order, one more time to make sure there was a picture displaying around midnight. I saw it yet again when I loaded the 1/1/10 image and two screens later it hit finally me. Hey, wait a minute, let's back up a minute....

My excuse is the salad was unusual enough and then I probably thought cool, red dressing, alright! (It does look good doesn't it?) I'm just surprised a couple hundred people saw it and no one even asked about the bottle.

It's a bottle of food IMO. You can legally bring in stuff like OFF in an aerosol spray can but not PAM - at least the way I interpret the rules. My brain just assumed salad dressing wasn't food I guess. When I realized it even could possibly be considered a bottle of food I made it go away.

I know the BW allows beer in plastic bottles but you can't burn your empties. Peanut butter is obviously food but those 'jars'   would be considered acceptable -IMO- perhaps reusable? Salad dressing also comes in packets though so I'd prefer a POD wasn't somehow 'suggesting' bottles for that purpose. Maple syrup? I don't know, I always splurge and get the real stuff and repackage into more conveniently shaped bottles for group trips.

I asked and brought in a glass bottle of Buckley's once with blessings from the staff - because that's not considered food I guess.

Don't take my word for anything though. I could easily be wrong and or over complicating things - and I'm certainly not judging the photographer. It's just my well reasoned and insightful, personal opinion while thinking of my own safest, easiest, best path options.

Agree...looks like a WHITEFISH.

Redhorse are a member of the "sucker family".  Hmmm...perhaps the namesake of my spring solo....Thompson lake down Redhorse creek to Redhorse lake to Redhorse bay of Namakan.

But what red bottle are you talking about?  I see no such thing in the photo of the salad on the canoe. 

As for the fish, one of our guys had a fish id guide and based on that we figured it was a redhorse.  Strangely, caught it in deep water, with a small sinking rapala!

Today's POD is beautiful, where was it taken?

The only thing I did when that picture came off my camera was to crop it and send it to db. I have several more of that bull including a little video.

Its a little hard for me to judge the distance in my memory but I would guess about 100FT.  Most of the time he would not even look my way.  He wanted the breeze to keep the bugs off his face. The canoe kept drifting so my back was facing him. That was at the narrows on Burnside Lake on my solo trip this past summer.  Todays POD, the camp sight with the hammock is my camp sight on Sturgeon Lake.

Definitely a lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis.  They are a coldwater fish, often in deep water.  They have a small mouth and therefore usually target small prey, so they are not commonly caught by anglers.  Very good eating.

Great loon shot, Ken.  I'm wondering what part of the summer or fall you took it in.  I notice a little whitening around the chin of the loon and am thinking that is the beginning of fall molt into nonbreeding plumage, which I saw a fair amount of this September.  But maybe I'm wrong and it's just normal breeding plumage.  Do you remember when you took the pic?

I didn't plan on using this loon shot though, hard to tell what's going on but after HoHo's post I looked for an EXIF date using this one. I think I see a tail going down too and what looks like water droplets flying about so that became a good reason to display it today. They are at the size that was sent so I have no extra details to consider.

1/23 sure was a nice eagle shot.  How do you get that kind of clarity on a moving target zoomed from distance?  I take pictures, but clearly I'm not a photographer!

I was talking with the FS Station Crew and I understand that the Forest Service did a controlled burn in that area to block the potential fires over the blowdown area.

Yes, Ho Ho; the campsite is on the south shore on the west end of the lake (The north shore is rugged and in Canada).  That last chance to get a site on that end of the lake. It was a good site because you could access it from two sides, from a protected bay on the east side.  Ottertrack has limited campsites with only one campsite on the east end.  I wonder why the FS didn't also create a campsite at the old miner's camp on the east end that looks like a nice site.
