Namakan dam

Anyone know the latest info for the proposed dams?  Has there been any move forward on the project the last 5 yrs?  In all reality do you feel the project dead or alive?

The last news items I've seen have 2010 dates.  Read to me as if this baby is going through.  I've seen no real news with a 2011 date.  Anyone?

Thinkin' of a Namakan river solo this fall.  (added)....anyone know the last day of operation for the mechanized portages at Loon and Beaty?  Something tells me "late Sept"?  Think I'd tow to LLC and paddle back to Crane.

I was curious about this myself. We did a loop from Beaverhouse, Bearpelt, Wolesely, Namakan and back out through Beaverhouse in July. When we were at High Falls I recalled hearing something about a dam proposal and we saw what looked to be two metal test pipes drilled into the bedrock.

Caught a flatish, 16" lonf silvery fish without a sucker mouth below the falls. My best estimation is a white bass. Any other thoughts out there.

The river is full of sturgeon...probably a young-un?  Anything like this?

In fact, the anti-dam'ers are touting the sturgeons habitat in the Namakan.

No it wasn't a Sturgeon, but that would have been cool to catch. I did a Ontario ministry of Natural Resources, Ontario fish search and looking at the chart it still looked like a White Bass. So, I did a google image search and found a picture that matched it exactly...

As you will see, it is more silvery than white.

It may have been a mooneye, there are plenty in the Namakan and Maligne rivers. I've never seen a White bass up there.

Hi again.

The fish I caught did not have a sucker mouth. Given its shape (sort of football-ish) I would have assumed Whitefish if it had a sucker mouth. It was about 14-16 inches and looked more silvery (identical to the picture linked above) instead of much smaller and white like the mooneye.

It seems out of place for a White Bass (more prominant in South Eastern Ontario and the US) but given the pictures, size and shape, I am fairly convinced that it must have been. I have a lousy picture that my wife took as I was struggling not to lose the fish as it flipped from my hands onto the rock.  Roll Eyes I will post the picture tomorrow. Perhaps it may help with the mystery.
