That water spider appears to be short on legs.  Maybe it got lucky and the fish only got small bite vs. a meal?

Today's POD combines two of my favorite things.
A reflection day and paddling a narrow waterway.
I know there is a Moose somewhere  Wink Grin

I missed this comment a few days ago.  If there was a moose, we didn't see it.  There was a dolmen, and I blew my chance to get a good photo of that!   Embarrassed

This group of photos, including today's spider, were all taken on our 2009 canoe trip, named "Celebration Trip".  So named because it was the trip we took in September after Spartan1 had his kidney transplant in January.  (Yes, on January 21st we will celebrate the 14th anniversary of his kidney transplant--seems hard to believe sometimes.)  That trip was fun, six days of sunshine and clear skies in early September and we planned an easy trip. Too easy, as it turned out; we were both really up for more, but we didn't want to push it the first time after his surgery so we did quite a bit of loafing around and paddling on the Kelso River, which is, indeed, a narrow waterway.

Such a blessing.  As I have seen the photos in POD's, I have reflected on how very blessed we have been iin the past 14 years.

I think it is a perspective thing.  As I remember this particular spider, she was sitting atop an enormous egg pouch, and so the legs are reaching down, not splayed directly out as it might seem.   I certainly didn't get any feeling that the spider's legs were shorter than usual.  Can't prove that, though.

Linda,

I believe PD's comment had more to do with the spider seemingly "missing" a leg or two RATHER than what legs he/she does have being "short."

I remember thinking the same thing when I first saw that POD, as well.  I suspect this particular arachnid may have one of its legs tucked up underneath where we can't see it.  On the other hand, I suppose it IS  possible the little bugger is a leg short.

Later,

Jimbo   Cool

Jimbo is spot on.  The spider's legs do look long enough - probably longer than most spider legs but it appears there are only seven vs. the requisite eight.  I looked hard to find evidence of #8, but the way they are segmented, it would have to be poking straight down through the egg sack to not be seen.  That back right leg just seems to not be there.  I suspect a fish got hold of it and just prefers legs over wings!

Yes, of course.  And now that this discussion has taken place, I remember at the time I first saw the photo we remarked that it was a seven-legged spider.  Sigh.  I guess I wasn't very alert when I read the other post.  Thanks, Jimbo.   Embarrassed
