Today's POD and it's " This is going to get interesting" caption is why as a solo paddler I'm hoping my work-out regimen has given me the energy to make it across IF I decide to commit.

One thing all us solo paddlers know is the feeling of running low on energy and your to far in to turn back.
That's when your wishing you had 2 "motors" instead of one.  Wink Grin Grin

Yeah, little ripples like in the POD rarely bode well. At best they keep you honest.

Good bass fishing on the upper (right) side of this Pickerel Lake isthmus where this pic was (probably) taken.  Not much size but plenty of action.  Some nice beach campsites nearby, too.

I dredged someone's fishing pole out of the water while trolling deeper water not far from this very spot (20 years ago?).  I think I still have it and the old-timey Mitchell spinning reel (you can't kill those things; it rehabbed just fine and still works).

Anyway, I find it amazing how these POD images rekindle such vivid memories... even if I am DEAD WRONG about where the pic was actually taken.  Doesn't seem to matter.

Thanks for sending db so many good pics!

Later,

I wonder if today's POD isn't in WC on Carrol Lake? I remember doing the exact same "portage" on that lake due to the wind kicking up. Smiley

I don't think this one even qualifies as a "portage" between lakes.  If I'm not mistaken, this more of a sandbar liftover, a quick exit from the west side of a small bay below a few islands in south central Pickerel.

Of course, HighnDry, it COULD be Carroll Lake in WCPP.  Also, just as likely, Phantom Jug's famous jug COULD be buried somewhere below the sand on that isthmus.  I submit this is probably not the case, however (though the absence of one of PJ'S jugs is, perhaps, less of a sure thing).

My money is on Pickerel Lake.

Considering the recent POD area, I suspect it's the isthmus connecting a previous campsite (the one with the punky birch) to the larger island to the north (Pickeral).

40 yrs ago, the middle part was underwater as I recall.

Today's POD makes me nervous.
On one hand it's great to have firewood when you need/want it.

On the other hand, do I want to be there when a wind that brought those trees down comes ripping thru.  Undecided Shocked Grin
