Why not carry in a sonar unit? I have taken in my portable unit with 2 6V flashlight batteries hooked up in series. (6V + 6V =12V). They last the whole trip if you don't forget to turn them off at night. If your unit isn't portable you can take the transducer off your boat and hook it up to a large suction cup. I went up to Quetico 1 time without my sonar but "never again". If you're serious about your fishing it's worth the extra couple of pounds.
