We were at campsite 8 on Lake One. The bear entered the campsite at 11:30 a.m. while we were packing to leave. The bear was very quiet and we didn't notice it until it was about 20 feet from us. It was intent on sniffing at our gear. We moved out of its way as soon as we saw it and watched to see what it would do. It sniffed everything and then picked up the small bag of garbage that we were going to pack out, turned and walked off carrying the garbage bag in its mouth. It was a green Marshall Field's bag. The sight of the bear carrying it away by the handles was quite comical, but we felt bad that our garbage would be strewn somewhere in the forest.

We were returning from Rebecca Falls headed toward the Bottle Portage. We were in the narrow area about half way between the falls and the portage. The bear swam in front of us and ran quickly up a bluff. There was no sign of aggressiveness from the bear. Truly an awesome sight. The bear probably weighed about 150 to 175 pounds.

Number of people: 3
Cubs present: None
Personality: Timid
Ended when: Bear left due to loud noises

Important
Details:

Coming off of the portage from N Wilder into the stream leading to Kawishi R/Hudson Lake. At the put-in just upstream is a large rock about 30 yards away. The bear was on the rock and not aware of us until we put the canoes down. At that time he ran off. Beautiful, very large, very black adult.

When we paddled past the rock (we had to lift around it BTW) we saw bear droppings with crawdad shells in it on the rock. The bear probably visits there often.
