We were at campsite 8 on Lake One. The bear entered the
campsite at 11:30 a.m. while we were packing to leave. The bear
was very quiet and we didn't notice it until it was about 20 feet
from us. It was intent on sniffing at our gear. We moved out of
its way as soon as we saw it and watched to see what it would
do. It sniffed everything and then picked up the small bag of
garbage that we were going to pack out, turned and walked off
carrying the garbage bag in its mouth. It was a green Marshall
Field's bag. The sight of the bear carrying it away by the handles
was quite comical, but we felt bad that our garbage would be strewn
somewhere in the forest. |

Details: |
We were returning from Rebecca Falls headed toward the Bottle
Portage. We were in the narrow area about half way between the
falls and the portage. The bear swam in front of us and ran quickly
up a bluff. There was no sign of aggressiveness from the bear.
Truly an awesome sight. The bear probably weighed about 150 to
175 pounds. |

Bear entered Hunter Island camp with a couple of soft grunts
and a minute or so later hurriedly exited camp. It returned and
got itself alarmed again, bolted again, splashing through a nearby
shallow bay. With nothing to eat it did not return. |

Island campsite just South and West of Moose Bay facing
southern shore of Saganagons. Witnessed bruin swimming from Rat
Bay across to Island. Showed up 30 min later at camp, no reason
for visit (food hung, no left over smell since nothing cooked
yet). Left with pots and pans, but back at 4 am and pepper spray
used to repel. Found new campsite next day after more aggressive
return second time around. Big male 300-350lbs. |

Details: |
Coming off of the portage from N Wilder into the stream
leading to Kawishi R/Hudson Lake. At the put-in just upstream
is a large rock about 30 yards away. The bear was on the rock
and not aware of us until we put the canoes down. At that time
he ran off. Beautiful, very large, very black adult.
When we paddled past the rock (we had to lift around
it BTW) we saw bear droppings with crawdad shells in it on the
rock. The bear probably visits there often.

Details: |
Bears were spotted as we were paddling through lake. The
bears were on a small island near shore in the entrance to Kawa
Bay, Kawnipi Lake. We were a good distance apart. We were told
about these bears by the ranger at Cache Bay and were told that
they have been near campers cooking, sniffing the air, but moved
on, on their own. |
