Weapons in the BWCAW

When we checking in at the Ranger Station the ranger was taking care of us and another group at the same time. When she asked if anyone brought any firearms a guy in the other group said yes. He'd brought a .45 Glock handgun. My question is...why in the hell would anyone want to bring a handgun into the BWCAW??!!? And don't tell me it's for protection from bears. It's just so stupid!
