Portage Description: The McKenzie Map series (2004) has an incorrect start location for this portage which adds 100 rods of very difficult travel over unmaintained blowdown covered trail along the lake. The McKenzie maps combine the portage with a trail to Johnson falls and does not show the actual portage end on Pine. The moment we crawled out of blowdown at the real start of the portage was the first time I've ever wanted to commit mayhem against a cartographer. The true portage is a nice trail with several steep uphill sections coming out of Pine and one steep downhill into Canoe Lake. The trail passes through a beautiful mature pine stand at the Canoe Lake end of the portage. Lake after portage: Canoe Known campsites: 3 Lake Description: Canoe is a small lake with 3 campsites, but is only a short hop portage from Alder with many campsites, and Pierz Lake, a quiet cul-de-sac with 3 sites. Pierz was the only place we found empty campsites in a 12 mile search. Portage from Canoe into: Return to Pine
