Portage Description: This is a series of three portages taking us from Pickerel Lake, out of the Quetico and into Nym Lake. The first of the three portages, approximately 950 meters had a variety of terrain. The trail started off with a short climb away from Pickerel. The main challenge was a large portion of the trail that led through a swamp. Even with a relatively low water level, we found ourselves knee deep in water. Be careful as you walk here there are hidden potholes. The landing at the end of this portage, on Gillnet Lake isn't great. There is plenty of space to pile packs and canoes at the end of the portage without blocking the trail. Getting everything into the canoes is a bit more of a challenge as the landing is small to non-existent. A short paddle of approximately 1.5 kilometers will take you to the second or the portages. There is a good landing for unloading all packs. The last stretch of this portage is a bit treacherous with a very steep decline down to the lake. This part should be taken very slowly. The third portage was very short. We were advised that if the water level was too low this portage may actually be 350 meters. We were able to pull over a beaver dam and canoe most of this and ended with a very short portage. There is a logging road (unsure if this is still in use as we were out of Quetico by this time) at the beginning of the portage (good point to stop for lunch or a break). A short walk led us to a creek and the end of the portage. The landing was rather small, so if traveling with a few canoes, it may be advisable to take one canoe at time down this stretch, load it and depart from the landing. Lake after portage: Nym Known campsites: 2 Lake Description: A short paddle through a creek at the end of the third portage will take you into Nym Lake. Nym is out of Quetico so be prepared to see vacation homes, power lines and motor boats. Welcome back to reality. Nym is a nice paddle through many islands Portage from Nym into: Batchewaung
