Predicting Weather - Test Your Knowledge
For the following five questions assume that you are crew chief on
a high adventure wilderness canoe trip in Canada. You are responsible
for the safety of everyone and for making sure that your crew travels
at least 10 miles per day, on average. You can ask your crew for recommendations
for each of the following five situations, but you must make the final
decision.
1.) On
a two week canoe trip it started raining after the 3rd day. It is now
the 5th morning and the wind has moved around to the West. Is this a
lay over day or a travel day? Answer.
2. ) In
the mid afternoon on the 7th day, your crew is heading East. Your crew
is seriously behind schedule with about 5 miles to make up to keep to
your '10 mile per day average' schedule. You need to cross the next
large lake to make up the distance. High puffy clouds have been forming
in the blue sky and have become darkened as the afternoon has progressed
and the sun is now hidden. The wind from the West has picked up some
during the last half hour. What do you decide? Answer.
3. ) On
the 10th morning the wind is from the Northeast and there are cirrus
clouds overhead. What do you plan for? Answer.
4. ) The
wind is from the Southwest and there are cirrus clouds overhead. What
do you plan for? Answer.
5. ) Explain
the saying "Red sails in morning, sailor take warning. Red sails
at night, sailors delight." Answer.
