Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?     a lot.  200 maybe

Preferred/Typical party size?    i like 4.  6 is good also

What length of trips do you do/available to do?    nowdays, 7 days is normal. 10-12 is what i prefer

Preferred season?     if kids are along, the summer so we can swim.  if not, early june or september

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?    prefer to travel, but will base camp

What difficulty level do you go for?  that is just one of the factors in planning trip

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?  familar with most of park except the lac la croix/crooker lake region.  would like to go there sometime

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?   normally stern, but like the bow also.

What is your paddling rhythm?  when i need to paddle, i paddle, when i don't need to paddle, i don't

Paddle the shoreline or beeline? depends on what we are doing.  beeline if we are covering distance, shoreline if not.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? personally, i am ok to get out in most everything, but i will stay on the shore if safety is an issue with the group i am with

Do you have strong navigation/map skills?  i like to look at the map.  i love to try to navigate by visual clues and memories when we are at places i have been before

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? with kevlar, they are fine.

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? i am short.  the deep ones suck.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? cook, but  i don't mind washing.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? i am blind without contacts or glasses.  i also have kidney stones and take along some major drugs just in case (those who have been there before, know what i am talking about).  i would also like to have elective surgery and have my appendix removed so it never ruptures, but everyone else thinks i am crazy

Do you like to go after the northern lights?  yes.  they are one of nature's free wonders, but it takes effort to stay up that late.

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?  high winds are a bitch and i don't like paddling in sleet

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?  making sure you are going in with the right group limits or eliminates problems, but we discuss if needed or bury it if talking will go nowhere

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  none, but if the food was gone, we would probably head in

I'm heading back into the BW on Aug. 12th after a 5 year hiatus and can't wait to get back.  I hope to see you there.

Where do you live? Baltimore, MD via TX and St. Paul, MN
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 30ish
Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?  Partial, need canoes from the outfitter.
Preferred/Typical party size?  4-8  Prefer 4-6
What length of trips do you do/available to do? Mostly 5 days but will shoot for 7 or 8 next year
Preferred season?  Late summer is the only option right now due to work schedule.  I also prefer it for the warmer water.
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?  I like to do most of my travel on the first day and then base camp/move once or twice the rest of the time.
What difficulty level do you go for?  I would prefer hard but it depends on the group.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas?  I really like heading into EP #16 and am doing it again next week.  However, I also like getting up into Q-- Namakan river/Thompson lake area.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?  Stern, almost always.
What is your paddling rhythm?  Depends on my Bow
Paddle the shoreline or beeline?  beeline, the faster to camp the better.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?  Been in 6 foot waves on LLC before, wouldn't call it comfortable but it was still bearable in the Voyageur I was in.
Do you have strong navigation/map skills?  I think so.  I seem to be able to find my way pretty easily if I have some landmarks to follow.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?  I've never done anything but single.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Back---I just strap everything on.  But I've never soloed so that would be a different story.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?  Can't say that I've run into too many of them.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?  Nice change of pace.  As long as I don't run into too many consecutively.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?  Cook, I hate doing dishes.
Fresh or dried foods?  Dried, am doing Mountain house for all of our dinners on the upcoming trip but will do some frying if the fishing turns out to be good.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove?  Both.
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?  Cook
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?  At least a couple.
Hang the food pack or ground it?  Have floated it in the past, and bear barreled, but will be hanging it this time.
Axe? Saw? Both?  Axe
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)  Both preferably.  But if I was to choose one, I'd say sit around the campfire all night.  I love campfires.
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?  Sun-up

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?  Not too seriously but probably a couple hours a day on average.
Which species do you like to go after?  Smallies and Pike
How much tackle to you bring?  One small 6"x4" lure box.
Are you good with a fillet knife?  With everything except NP.  Still can't get all those friggin' bones out.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?  Nah, other than the fact that I'm getting older and slightly plumper.
Level of alcohol consumption?  Once or twice on the trip to relax with the trip-mates.  Not getting hammered though.
Are you a smoker?  Nope
Is photography high on your list?  It's on the list, but I'm more concerned with the relaxation and the memories
Do you like to go after pictographs?  Sure, but they're also not a huge priority.
Do you like to go after waterfalls?  We'll definitely be making a couple day trips to play in the falls.
Do you like to go after the northern lights?  I never expect them but love to see them.  They can absolutely MAKE a trip.

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?  Nothing can ruin a trip, other than a serious injury resulting in having to leave early.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?  Was in a blowdown about 10 years back, I'd say that was difficult.  Trees crashing down around the tent in the middle of the night is a bit hair-raising.  It sounded like a freight train making its way through the forest before it hit.
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?  Let's get it out there and resolve it.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  Absolutely nothing.

Basics
Where do you live?
-Edison, NJ. I also spend much of my time at my upstate NY cabin that I built this year.

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
-I couldn't even begin to guess. I canoe 40-50 days annually, that's day and overnight trips. I used to be more comfortable in a sleeping bag than a bed, but age and a new mattress has changed that.

Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer?
-My own gear... 4 or 5 times over.

Preferred/Typical party size?
-About 4 or so in solo canoes. Otherwise solo.

What length of trips do you do/available to do?
-I've done everything from daytrips to a 6 month expedition. Currently I could manage a 3-4 day trip if a get together was in the works.

Preferred season?
-Spring/Fall

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
-Travel pretty much every day. I always want to base camp, but for one reason or another, never get to.

What difficulty level do you go for?
-Intermediate. If you mean whitewater, I don't generally go over 2+

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to
spend time there or explore new areas?
-Still trying to make my first trip to the BW/Q. Would like to join a group solo with folks that at are familiar with areas. The whole permit thing confuses me...

Paddling
Bow or stern preference?
-Solo only

What is your paddling rhythm?
-There's really no rhythm, rhyme or reason to my paddling. I paddle relatively constant, but not haphazardly.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline?
-Somewhat shoreline, occasional beeline between points

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?
- I've paddled during an unexpected microburst and it was one of the most memorable trips for me. Whitecaps will keep me on shore

Do you have strong navigation/map skills?
-Average, but I love to follow the map and look for landmarks... it's kinda like following a treasure map.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?
-Single, I like to hike, but I enjoy the canoeing more.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?
-On my back: All in the pack or canoe

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages?
-Depends on how well rested I am. The older i get, the more rest breaks I need

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?
-As long as I can get my boots back!

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?
-Cook

Fresh or dried foods?
-Fresh first night, dried after that

Cook over a fire, or over a stove?
-Stove, except for the occasional kabob or fresh fish

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?
-Cook 50% of the time

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?
-Not more than one or two

Hang the food pack or ground it?
-Ground it in a bear barrel or keep it in the tent (no lectures please)

Axe? Saw? Both?
-I like to keep it light, so just a saw, but occasionally the axe also

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both)
-Spend at least a few hours around the campfire and get up by 7:00

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?
-Between 8:00 & 9:00

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing?
-Sometimes after camp is setup

Which species do you like to go after?
-Any

How much tackle to you bring?
-If fly fishing, only some flies and leaders. If spin fishing, a small tackle box

Are you good with a fillet knife?
-Average

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?
-No

Level of alcohol consumption?
-Very occasional glass of wine

Are you a smoker?
-no

Is photography high on your list?
-yes

Do you like to go after pictographs?
-yes

Do you like to go after waterfalls?
-yes

Do you like to go after the northern lights?
-yes

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you?
-no

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with?
I've paddled everything from blizzards to 110 degree days and even a hurricane once (dumb).

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?
-Discuss it

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?
-Family member crisis. Irritating people whom I am dependent on for a ride home.

usually around a week now.
Preferred season? Sept and early May prefered, but any time is cool.
Winter trips also.!
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? our last few trips have been with younger paddlers, so we tend to base camp a bit more. But depending on who is along, we adjust.
What difficulty level do you go for? did the gonzo paddling when much younger, now tend to take it a bit easier.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? I've been lucky enough to try different areas, and still like to explore. There are some favorites still.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? I'm usually in the back, as I have a younger / still not so experienced partner in the front. When with adults, it doesn't matter to me either way.
What is your paddling rhythm? steady
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? both, mostly shoreline for the sites.
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? that depends on who is along. With the younger kids along, we'll ride out the storms.

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? my knees are getting a bit
too fragile for excess weight, so mostly now doubles.
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? mostly on the back, you do what you need to I guess.
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? rest if there are the canoe rests, or else plod along.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? watch where you step, so you don't get a sprain mostly.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? cook and wash in that order.
Fresh or dried foods? both, but leaning more towards mostly fresh lately.
Cook over a fire, or over a stove? stove and reflector oven on the fire
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? having coffee is a must in the morning,
but quick breakfasts are as easy as boiling some water and mixing with
what we bring along.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? as many as we can, but bring along food in case we get skunked fishing...
Hang the food pack or ground it? both, depends on the area.
Axe? Saw? Both? both
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) campfire is nice, but I get sleepy early and wake at the crack of dawn.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? some, not a lot.
Which species do you like to go after? walleyes, perch, trout, we'll eat snakes to if that's all we catch, and smallies about the same.

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? bury it.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? none
