Portage Description:
This portage starts just past the island at the corner of the Iron Lake. It starts with the hardest part, a quick uphill and then a quick hairpin turn. After that it's all uphill, but the path is relatively easy to walk. There is a second takeout which is the one marked on the maps, but it requires you to paddle upstream against the current. I would only recommend trying this for experienced paddlers. The water level was quite high and the normal put in was too dangerous by the top of the falls. We needed to walk further downshore on Crooked Lake to put in. All in all it's one of the most beautiful portages I've ever seen. Ending the portage by the falls is spectacular. It's worth taking a few pictures of the falls. The map distance is misleading. I would guess that a more accurate distance would be 160 rods. Watch out for the current paddling around the island on Iron Lake. In 2003 the current got a hold of our 2-man kayak and flipped us.
