Portage Description: Give yourself plenty of time to find this portage entrance, and be patient on the boggy route. Many maps show two portages along the creek to Kahshahpiwi; it is in fact one long portage. The entrance is in the larger southeast bay of Trant Lake, a shallow, log-studded bay around N48 16'41.36", W91 26'28.67. It follows the creek along its east side, occasionally dipping under cedars and over knee-high rocks, but mostly through knee-deep mud well traveled by moose. You put in at a widening creek on the northeast arm of Kahshahpiwi. Lake after portage: Kahshahpiwi Known campsites: 3 Lake Description: The whole chain of lakes from Kahshahpiwi to Cairn Lake is a cliff-studded fault line of mesmerizing beauty. Most of the campsites on Kahshahpiwi are on the eastern shore, although the big island at the mouth to the southeast bay (towards Yum Yum) has a campsite (no firewood) with a charming shallow "garage" for canoes.
