Portage Description:
This is the hardest portage in the Boundary Waters and it leads eventually to a lake (Vista) where there are more people than I've ever seen, even taking off from Ely. I recommend doing what we did. That is, camp on Little Trout and do this puppy as a day trip with as little gear as possible.
It starts up a fairly steep hill with loose rocks and from there imagine a roller coaster with extreme elevation changes, 6" deep mud, mildewy slippery boardwalks, gnarly roots, strewn with boulders, more loose rocks, extreme elevation changes, some beautiful views, and overgrown for much of it.
Honestly, if Vista is your destination with full packs, enter it from the north or east, not this way.
