On all of my previous trips I have not worried about drinking water directly from the lakes, without boiling, filtering, or otherwise treating it. I have never suffered any ill effects from bacteria or parasites, but I am wondering if this is wise. I don't collect my drinking water in turbid or swampy areas, for obvious reasons, but I have always considered the crystal clear, cold water of the canoe country as perfectly safe. I really have no reason to think otherwise now, however I was curious if any of you, more frequent visitors, did the same, or if anyone is aware of health risks that I should be cautious of.
