Photography in the Q

I've seen some great photographs on this and other sites and I am a little curious about the approach of the photographers in the group. I am an amateur photographer, but my Olympus Stylus is the best I've been willing to bring along. I've always traveled with large groups (scouts), so that seems to limit painstaking photography excursions. Questions for photographers: Do you go out with the specific intention of taking the time to get that "great" shot or do they just happen? Do you travel solo or in smaller, similarly inclined groups? How good and how much equipment do you take?

Thanks, Doug
