Hatchet to Ima

Boundary Waters portage

Season/Year: Summer 97
Water Level: average
Length: 50 rods
Rating: average

Portage Description:
This portage is rated average because of the short distance. Don't let this fool you however, the terrain is fairly difficult in that it is a quick steep rise and a quick drop. The portage heads are narrow and allow only one canoe to load or unload on the Ima side.

Lake after portage: Ima
Known campsites: 8+
Lake Description:

Ima is a big hole in the ground. It can be very windy with killer waves. Finding the portage at the west end can be a bit tricky so take your time and read your map. The camp site directly to the north is a favorite. It is large with the fire grate well out on the rock point and offers exposure to the wind by facing west. One of my top ten sites over the previous 12 years.
