Portage Description:
The portage from Hudson is tucked back in a bay, making landing easy. Some steep hills at the beginning, and a big drop at the end make it a bit tough, but altogether not a bad portage. We went in right after the Big Storm, so some trees were down and blocked the way, don't know about that now. The view of Insula from the top of the last hill just before it descends is just outstanding--maybe my favorite picture I've ever taken in BWCA. The landing at Insula is smooth, easy at the water level we encountered.

Lake after portage: Insula
Known campsites: 8+
Lake Description:

Lake Insula is an island studded paradise, lots of campsites and good fishing. Takes a bit of effort to get here, so not too much company. We found lots of empty campsites during a busy period to visit. Easy to get lost, so make sure you watch the map and know where you are at all times. We took headings and tried to "stay found" and still had a bit of trouble finding some marked campsites. Lots of loons, great walleye and privacy--what more could you ask.
