Portage Description:
During our trip in 2000, the water was normal and we took the lower trail which is very muddy (the kind of mud that sucks your boots off). People carrying the canoe had to wade through the mud puddles, while those with packs could cut through the woods and avoid some of the mud. The water was very high during our trip in June 2001, so we took the higher trail which was longer however much easier because there was no mud. The high trail branches off the main (lower) trail to the right after approximately 1/3 of the portage and follows a ridge above the main trail. I plan to take the high trail in the future unless it is really dry. I would rather climb a little than wade through the mud.

Lake after portage: Iron
Known campsites: not sure
Lake Description:

I wouldn't waste my time fishing on Iron. Keep on trucking and fish in Crooked or one of the lakes to the north of Crooked. You might want to fish for walleye at Curtain Falls from the Canadian side if the water level is right. Fishing on the U.S. side is not worth stopping for.
