Now that I look at the map. What we're really looking at is McAree to Pond Lake to Gratton (via that portage) then a short portage into Wicksteed. I'm calling that lake after the long portage Gratton (the one with those two twin lobes). I don't remember where we camped any more, probably on Pond, so we could hit the portage fresh. Then I think we poked around Wicksteed for a while, essentially drifting towards the portage to Darky. I mainly remember there was a mayfly hatch happening on Wicksteed and catching a bunch of Northerns the few hours we were there. I had a brand new canoe at the time and drifting over those big boulders made me a bit nervous. Actually I don't usually fish for Northerns, but I didn't really have a choice that day. On some lakes the Bass grab my lures before the Walleyes get a chance, on Wicksteed it was the Northerns. If I ever go back I'd actually think about using a wire leader. I probably still wouldn't, but I'd think about it.
