Portage Description:
Staff from the Scout Base have nicknamed this trail, and the one further west that goes between Wind and Basswood, as the "Wind Lake Death Marches." The name shouldn't deter you from these two trails, however. There is plenty of sunshine on the sunny days, and this route sees a considerable amount of traffic, due to its location near the busiest entry point in the Ely area. It climbs up-and-over one line of hills. The main reason for the nickname is because novices have tended to overestimate thier own abilities when it comes to portaging. These two trails serve as a kind of reality check, and are more difficult than the portage between Cacabic and Thomas - only, no mud here. No shade here any longer, either. Those sunny days will make the canoe act like a heating element around your head on these two portages. At the end of the trip, these two portages are merely long, but will not appear difficult.

Lake Description:

Don't expect solitude here - you're between busy Basswood and Moose. They weren't kidding when they named the lake Wind Lake either, or Wind Bay, for that matter.
