McNiece to KahshahpiwiPortage Description: I want to weigh in on this one because previous posts make it sound hard and to be avoided. While it is harder than "average" and thus "difficult," the portage is lovely and not bad at all. When we went through in September 05 it had recently been cleared. There was one windfall that I had to climb over with the pack and later had to slide the canoe over (note: double portaging, not singling), but otherwise clear. There is a really crazy section at the Kahshahpiwi end where you descend into a small bog and then up a cliff face. This was easy in dry weather with low water. It would be challenging in wet weather, high water, or going the other way (where you are going DOWN the rock face) - but good judgment and a willingness to set the canoe down and assess the situation will get you through. I will definitely go this way again, I enjoyed this portage thoroughly. Lake after portage: Kahshahpiwi Known campsites: 8+ Lake Description: Kahshahpiwi is the queen of Quetico lakes, in my humble opinion. Argo is by comparison a mere jack. At the starting point, McNiece is beautiful with its old pines and has a number of fine campsites.
