Portage Description:
This is the Canyon Falls portage. As you head downstream, you will find the landing for this portage in a small cove on the left bank of the river just before the falls. The landing is poor, with room for 2 canoes at best, and it is difficult to unload without standing in fairly deep water to do so. To stay reasonably dry, land one canoe at a time. Canyon portage is very character-building. It has many deadfalls to go under and over, along with a couple of very steep sections. About 2/3 of the way through the portage you must negotiate a thick tangle of blowdowns and immediately descend a steep ravine and cross a small feeder stream. It is safer to two-man the canoes down this ravine, especially if the trail is slippery. Going the other way, it is possible to climb the ravine while carrying the canoe solo. Double-packing is not recommended. This portage also has an optional addition which may be used in high water for those paddling upstream. It is steep, rocky, and full of blowdowns. If you can make it upriver to the second landing, it is highly recommended. When approaching this portage from the downstream side, you will see the first landing on the right bank just below the fast water. To get to the second landing, hug the right shore and be prepared to paddle HARD. There are several spots along the way where you can grab a tree and rest before continuing to paddle up the fast water. Stay very close to the bank to avoid the swiftest water. The second landing has room for only one canoe at a time, so each canoe should wait for the previous canoe to be pulled completely onto the bank before starting up the fast water. Be safe. If you get broadside in this current, you will almost assuredly capsize. WEAR YOUR LIFEJACKET through the entire Falls Chain!!

Lake Description:

Below Canyon Falls is Kenny Lake. There are a couple of decent campsites just below the falls. One is on the right-hand point in the narrows of the lake. The other is on the small island just past the narrows.
