Quetico portage Posted by: Eric Bailey Season/Year: Summer 01 Water Level: high Length: 185 rods Rating: average | Additional Perspectives: Paul |
Portage Description:
Traveling from Side Lake (South) you'll begin this portage in the NW corner of the unnamed lake. The landing is made of boulders against a rockface. This "landing" follows a trail along the rock face for 2 rods and enters a cedar low area. Once you enter the cedar area bear to the right and you'll pick up the trail. My suggestion is to carry you gear to the cedar area and then "load up" for the portage. As of June of 2001 this was a great portage. A wide and clear trail with a slight rise leads a direct path to Kahshahpiwi. This is an above average trail with few rocky spots and lots of level ground. A real "state park" path.
I've always been able to paddle the small unnamed pond north of the beaver dam. I'd guess the long portage marked to the east of the pond is old and used very little. I have looked for a trail but never found one.
Lake after portage: Kahshahpiwi
Known campsites: 8+
Lake Description:
Kahshahpiwi - for the late arriving camper a good site is at the former ranger station site, west shore north of portage. Also if you go to the eastern shore across from the portage and hug the shore moving north you'll spot a hidden campsite in a cedar grove. The site is about 1/8 of a mile south of the ranger station which is on the opposite shoreline.
