Koma to Malberg

Boundary Waters portage

Length: ~20 rods
Rating: easy
Additional Perspectives:

Portage Description:
This portage parallels a short piece of the Kawishiwi River. You can see an interesting rapids from the portage trail, with a Volkswagon-sized glacial erratic as its centerpiece. As you approach the rock-slab landing from Koma, stay right to avoid being drawn downstream toward the rapids. Flow at this rapids ranges from trickling to raging, but attempting to shoot it would surely be a rock-knocker -- or worse! Watch for the resident bald eagle as you travel through Koma.

Lake after portage: Malberg
Known campsites: 4
Lake Description:

At the confluence of the Kawishiwi and Louse Rivers. Beautiful, sprawling arms and bays. Watch for moose and woodpeckers. Most of the campsites are very good.
