Portage Description:
I would have to concur with the previous post. There is a reason that the Townline Lake portage is heavily and often used. It is because the alternative is not very pleasant. The route following the river is a lot of bushwhacking. The first part flows downhill pretty quickly, with lots of rocks and stumps to pull your boat over here. Royalex or CrossLink is a must for these drag overs. After the drag session, there is a large marshy area you paddle through. The good part is that the liftovers are minimal in this area. Finally, you reach another set of rocky drops that will require you to get out of the boat and either drag the boat if you are dying to abuse it some more, or unload your gear and carry it if you want to limit the abuse. Eventually after about 1 1/2 hours of entertainment you reach Polly Lake. If you want an adventure and the water is high, this might be worth it, especially if you are daytripping with an empty boat. Otherwise, take your lumps and carry the boat on your shoulders.
