South Fowl to Pigeon River

Boundary Waters portage

Season/Year: Summer 01
Water Level: average
Length: 320 rods
Rating: difficult

Portage Description:
This portage although outside of the BWCA is needed to make the grand portage. This trail has not been cleared since the blowdown and was a very tedious undertaking.

I do not rate it as never again only because it is necessary for a trip to grand portage, which of all the trips I have taken was absolutely awesome.

Lake after portage: Pigeon River
Known campsites: 2
Lake Description:

There are 2 campsites on South Fowl. The one on the island is an excellent campsite. On the Pigeon River the only campsites are at Fort Charolotte at the beginning of the Grand Portage Trail, which are maintained by the national park service. Along the Pigeon River there were some portages that we were unable to find. Partridge Falls is far nicer than Curtain or Eddy or really any falls in the BWCA.
