Portage Description:
A fire, possibly a controlled burn, in the fall of 2003 left several hundred yards of toppled half burnt trees blocking the portage trail. The difficulty starts about 1.1 miles into the portage, just before the final stream crossing and after most of the gain in altitude. In addition, a new looking beaver dam in the area has raised a stream about 6 feet making a small lake not on the map. Between the two changes we were not able to find the portage trail on the other side of the burned area before it was getting late in the day. Not to mention feeding a canoe over a burned tree every 10 feet for several hundred yards in that terrain is difficult, especially with a 60lb pack. If you don't mind getting charcoal over everything, hiking in should not be too difficult, especially if you don't get lost easily. Just a heads up for anyone traveling there soon. We are planning another trip this fall, and will report if the portage is clear.
