Boundary Waters portage Posted by: Brian Johnson Season/Year: Summer 99 Water Level: high Length: 4? rods Rating: average | Additional Perspectives: |
Portage Description:
The portage itself is a piece of cake- it's getting there that's a little tricky. As you paddle up the creek from Wind Bay, you will come across a portage landing on the right. If your map has a 15 rod portage marked, this is the landing for what used to be that portage. Paddle on to the twin beaver dams and cross the one on the right side of the island (this is an impressive dam about 4 feet high). Once you're over the dam, paddle along the path that heads straight into the marsh (don't take the easier-looking path to the left). You'll have to go around the beaver lodge. Then as you approach Indiana Lake, you have to maneuver your canoe over several fallen trees (this is pretty comical with a bunch of people who don't want to get in the water). Finally you'll reach the landing, and it's just a few rods to the shore of Indiana Lake.
Lake after portage: Indiana
Known campsites: 2
Lake Description:
Indiana is a pretty lake with some large white and red pines along the north shore. Both campsites are under these big pines and although several of the giants came down in the storm, the sites still look pretty nice. The water in Indiana is wonderfully clear and you can watch fish down ten feet attack your lure. The lake is full of panfish- some decent sized, but infected with neascus (black spot). There are also populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass, and northerns. Although the majority of the fish are small, our group did lose a fairly large fish which we had not seen after several minutes of fighting.
