Portage Description:
Water levels on Stuart River have changed dramatically in the last two years due to the enterprise of a family of beaver. There is now a LARGE beaver dam just north of the 4th portage. Consequently water levels upstream (from the entry point side) are quite high. In fact, the wooden bridge at Swamp Creek was partially submerged. This makes paddling the Stuart River easy until the 4th portage. Below the dam water levels are VERY LOW and we did a lot of dragging/towing/poling of the canoes. The waterfall where Stuart River dumps into Stuart Lake is now dry. Bummer.
