SOLO CANOE TRIPING IS MY HOBBY.I SPEND THE WINTER GETTING EVERYTHING PULLED TOGETHER AND FIRST THING IN THE SPRING HEAD OUT INTO QUETICO.IN THE SUMMER I'LL MAKE A FEW LONG WEEKEND RUNS INTO THE BWCA AND THEN ANOTHER TWO WEEK SOLO INTO QUETICO IN THE FALL.I FISH OFF AND ON AND TAKE LOTS OF PHOTOS,SOMEDAYS I'LL JUST SIT AROUND A CAMP WITH A GREAT VIEW AND READ,DRINK TEA AND WATCH THE DAY GO BY. OTHER DAYS I'LL SHORELINE A BIG LAKE LOOKING AT EVERY TREE,ROCK AND MOSSY GLADE LIKE I NEVER SAW ONE BEFORE.I'VE SEEN THE MOOSE,BEAR AND OTTER AND HEARD THE NORTHERN LIGHTS HUMMING OVER MY ISLAND CAMP ON KAWNIPI LAKE. I'VE RUN WITH THE WIND AT MY BACK AND HUDDLED IN MY TENT DURING LIGHTING STORMS THAT ECHOED ACROSS THE SHIELD ROCK. WHEN I MEET PEOPLE AT THE PORTAGES AND THEY SEE I'M ALONE THEY ASK HOW CAN I DO IT BY MYSELF,THE STANDARD ANSWER IS "AS LONG AS YOUR NOT AFRAID OF THE DARK IT'S NO BIG DEAL" BUT I NEVER REALLY FEEL ALONE.THAT STORY YOU HEAR ABOUT LOST MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS AND TRAPPED CAVERS FEELING THAT "SOMEONE ELSE IS WATCHING OVER THEM" IS TRUE IN PERHAPS A LESSER SENSE DEEP IN QUETICO. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE WITH YOU PLACES TO PADDLE,THINGS THAT MUST BE SEEN, MY GEAR AND GRUB LISTS. IN CLOSING MAY YOU ALL,LIKE SAM CAMPBELL DID BACK IN THE 1940'S, FIND YOUR "SANCTUARY LAKE".

This year will be my 20th annual trip. Each year has been with at least one member of my family. The trip definitely happens, no weaseling out because of wherever you happen to be living at the time. Have always enjoyed partaking in a few unconventional luxuries, like steak on the grill with bernaise sauce, a cocktail with ICE, a cold draft beer from the keg, sitting in a folding chair, the double size air mattress or of course the solar shower. We travel heavy but generally stay put at one site and make day trips. We are enthusiastic followers of the mantra "leave the campsite cleaner than you found it." Have enjoyed getting my "fix" on this great website. Arigato Gozaimus means thank you very much...

Finally tired of our unadventurous life, I did a bit of research at the library, bought a cart full of camp gear, stocked up on "camp" food and took my four kids (ages 7, 10, 13 and 15) into the BWCA. It rained, we did circles with our rented canoes, it was cold, we were wet...and we fell in love with the place! Over the years, our trips have been numerous. My children are older now though, some have left home and we can no longer do what we did then, but the storehouse of memories I created for my children is a gift that will bless them forever.

This will be my third visit to the BWCA. Taking 3 other ppl with me for 6 days then dropping them off at airport in Duluth and returning for 5 day solo. Love the place and love the website, picked up some good ideas for cooking. Maybe I'll see some of you out there, 2 1/2 weeks and counting down.
